Human rights group Amnesty International says at least 1,600 people have been killed in attacks carried out by Boko Haram militants since the start of June.

At least 17 people died in various acts of violence linked to the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's northeastern region on Tuesday, according to security officials.

Army spokesman Sani Usman said early Wednesday that at least seven deaths had been caused by three suicide bombings in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

The bombers were counted among the dead, he specified, adding that 11 people had been injured in the blasts late Tuesday.

In the neighboring Yobe state, Sani said 10 Boko Haram militants were killed in an ambush by troops on Tuesday.

"They were ambushed while returning from an attack on Gajiram near Ngollom village," said the spokesman. He added various weapons were seized from the militants.
