Strasbourg Christmas Market terrorist killed in shootout as ISIS claims responsibility

The Strasbourg Christmas Market terrorist has been shot dead in a gun battle with police.

Cherif Chekatt, the main suspect in the attack, was reportedly holed up in a warehouse in the Neudorf/Meinau area of the eastern French city.

Hours later ISIS claimed responsibility for the terror attack saying that Chekatt was a 'soldier of the group', although they did not provide any evidence.

More than 700 officers were involved in the manhunt for Chekatt, which came to a bloody conclusion this evening. No one else was harmed.

"He fired on a team of public security officers who fought back," a police source told French news agency AFP.

Chekatt was armed with a pistol and a knife, the source added.

Elite officers from the RAID police unit fanned out along one street, some with their guns trained on the houses in front
of them, live television pictures showed.
